Art for Life's Sake
The skull in this painting is too pale. O, the ANGST! There was much hand-wringing when I realized the mistake. And all because I insisted on darkening the background and refining the shadows which I should have done first. At least the apple looks decent.

of the painting itself, assuming you are just as obsessed as I am with visual details. It's chalky. It needs help. I'll be up until the wee hours tonight, trying to fix this.

I've been reading Classical Painting Atelier by Juliette Aristides. M bought this book for me and it's BRILLIANT. The techniques, ideas and paintings are inspiring even if realism isn't your main focus. If you paint, you will love this book. The author is an accomplished artist and teacher; her work can be seen at Aristides Arts. I'm especially fond of this drawing.

If you are sick of my droning on about painting, check out my awesome circus-trained baby here (scroll past the first photo for baby overload):

My Tumblr Page with Baby Pics!

Malie's grandpa brought over a tricycle and she hopped on it like she was born to ride. M stood by to be sure she didn't fall. I took a ton of photos because that's what doting parents do.

Fun with Wind
I think it's been a couple of years since I posted any photos. I recently took a Seattle ferry ride and we got some fun shots with my hair in the wind! I love letting my hair go wild in the wind! :-)

toile waist cincher
This past weekend I attended a wasit cincher workshop at Farthingales and here is the result.

Now I know how flatlining works! This is cotton toile flatlined with one layer of coutil. Spiral bones on the seams with interior bone casings (I feel like I graduated using spiral bones instead of plastic.) and I gave myself the challenge of matching the pattern on the front. This pic is not the best, just a quick snap from a cell phone, but it's does the job. I learned so much! I have to say I love this method of construction. I've seen the future and it is single layer flatlined.

Osborne press
I got mine today! I am soooo happy!!! The 0 size die has a problem, but I am sure it will be replaced immediately!

So, how do you get your grommets all in a line? Anyone want to share tips and tricks?

Do you punch holes first then set grommet? or do it all in one? how do you lay the washer in, smooth side up or down?

I really need to learn how o use this thing. I also need it mounted.

Financial Aid 08-09
I guess grades don't mean much for getting financial aid at Gallaudet. My first year, I got $2500 per semester. I brought no academic history with me, so that was presumably a need-based grant. I've been waiting for my financial aid papers to show up in the mail, but I thought I'd check the online system. Looks like I got the same as last year, $2500 per semester, even though I did so well academically last semester! This kind of sucks, in my opinion...I was hoping that working hard would be rewarded with scholarship money or something. I guess I should look into outside scholarships - not that I'm eligible for any, I suspect - but I think doing so would affect my grant. I don't need to have grant money replaced by scholarship money, I need grant money in addition to scholarship money! Oh well, perhaps it's not finalized yet. I can always keep my fingers crossed that when my report comes in the mail, it'll have more attached.

It's cutting time
Well in just a few hours I have an appointment to go get my hair cut. My uncle's wedding is next weekend and I would like to have nice looking hair, instead of the bone straight, thin fine no volume even if I use a ton of mousse in it hair I have. Now I had my hair trimmed right around January, but I haven't had an actual cut and style in probably 4 years, maybe more. So I am a little nervous! Now the guy I am going to has cut my mom's hair, 2 of my aunt's hair (and used to cut the 3rd when she lived here) and my yiayia's hair for over 10 years, so I know I am in good hands. Only thing is... he likes to experiment. I am up for experimenting and all, but I just am nervous; but excited too. I printed out a few pictures so that I could tell him basically what I wanted and how long I wanted to keep it so that he doesn't go all crazy. It's a different style then I have ever had... it has sort of bangs. I haven't had bangs since I was in middle school, which has been about 15 years!

Well I had better go back to work before the day is over...

Wish me luck!!

Underbust Sizing quesiton
I have a simple sizing question. I have checked the memories.

I am making the LM Ladies Underbust corset. I am hoping for a fairly curvey finished shape and am going for a two inch waist reduction. I would like the finished corset to have a two inch gap in back.

I have not made the mock up yet, I am struggeling with where to start. My question is, if I size it for a two inch waist reduction, how should I size the hips and underbust? Should I use my natural measurments or size up for things getting squished out?

My measurements are 32" underbust, 30" waist, 39" hip.

Thank you so much for any direction.

Style Rant
How often do you guys where your hair down? The last time my mother saw me (last weekend) I had to wear my hair half up for a performance and she commented that I should wear it down more often. This is coming from the woman who wants me to cut my hair again. But due to my job (meat processing) and my hobbies (dancing and riding horses) I almost always have my hair in at least a pony tail, if not in a braid, bun or various braided styles. Even when I am not doing any of those things it is just easier for me to put my hair up. I mean its kind a wavy/curly and fine, and has a mind of its own. Really if I don't keep it up, it will get caught on things, is hard to comb or brush out and hits many people in the face when I dance with them. its just frustrating when I do wear it down and it looks so pretty and I get complements on it, I get home and have a rats nest in there some where and I have to put it back up again. I never plan on cutting my hair short ever again, and I do love the look of it and all the cool styles I can put my hair into now. I sometimes want to run to the hills screaming because I get told that I should wear it down more often. And it is normally by people who have never had their hair long and don't know just how much work it is when I do wear it down.

bah /rant.

I'm new here. . . Hi :)
I've always loved long hair...Unfortunately mine isn't long anymore :(
At the beginning of the year I though I'd try short hair. I looked through MILLIONS of
picture and everyone looked gorgeous so i was sure that
short hair would probably suit me too.
I was wrong. And now I'm gonna have a bad hair day for a VERY long time !
And from now on I will never cut my hair again...MAYBE trim it...but just a little (1 or 2 cm maybe :P )

So I thought I'd 'make' something out from having short hair ;)
I'm gonna take a picture every month so that everyone who cares can see the progress of growing hair

And some pictures!

Before my ugly haircut.
It  wan't that long but I was happy with it

And now (May 2008)
You can see that it even looks ugly from the back :((

But until it grows over my shoulder...I'll be wearing hats :)

See you next month :))

Burlesque / Model Photography – Bonnie Delight and Lola Lee
Last August, I had the pleasure of shooting over a beautiful summer morning with burlesque performers Bonnie Delight and Lola Lee. For almost 2 and a half hours, we worked through different poses and played off each other’s ideas. We were going for the very Victorian Gothic look in this shoot with touches of sexy. These shots are some of the color highlights. The ladies were very creative and melodramatic in their posing in keeping with the theme.

Classical realism = masochism.
My hands have paint stains, black and ground into my nail beds and fingertips. Mars Black is a harsh mistress, even with a nail brush and mineral spirits on hand. Using old black socks as paint rags is a messy practice because I can't see the paint stains on them.

I learned a valuable lesson last night after three hours of painting; always paint the blackest and deepest shadows FIRST, before working out details of a painting.

Things were looking good until I stepped back to view the entire piece. Now that the cast shadows on my current painting are dark enough, the skull looks washed out and pale. The cast shadow looks great on their own but the skull is all wrong, like a paper cutout I laid on top. I’ll post images tonight to show what I mean. *ARGGGGGH*

So back to the beginning. I'll deepen tones on the skull and beat myself repeatedly about the head and shoulders for making a stupid, obvious mistake that any first-year student should be able to see.

Such a stupid, simple mistake. Yet I had so much fun in the studio last night, I don't even care. It's a setback but ultimately the painting will be better for it. And so I do a little dance of joy while picking fragments of paint out of my nails.

Cone-Free Styling Products?
Hi all! I checked the FAQ and memories for a similar question and didn't find anything. Apologies, though, if this has already come up and I just missed it.

My hair is fine and weak, and I often use styling products (like gel and mousse) to thicken and protect it. However, I want to avoid -cones, and most products I've used are coney. Does anyone have any recommendations for products that add some texture but aren't filled with yuckiness? I know some of you use coconut or jojoba oil - is this a good, natural way to give my hair extra "oomph?" I love being kinder to my hair, but I hate that it's sort of boring sometimes.

I've switched to washing just every other day, but I still condition daily. I know that on the in-between days my hair has a little more texture, but it's still kind of unruly.

Tips? Suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Bone casing
Ok, here's a noob question if ever I heard one, but I have been reading the memories for the past hour and have still not worked it out! So I do apologise in advance if it's in a really obvious place and I just missed it ;)

When using bone casing - either external or internal - do you sew it on after sewing your corset pieces together? Or do you sew the casing onto the pieces and then sew them together? In the first case the stitching would go through all your layers. This is good, right?

Again, sorry if this seems really obvious - it's so late and my brain is frazzled!
